The 19 “E’s” of Excellence Revealed

When I saw it I lost my breath. It doesn’t happen often but when it does, WOW!

I wouldn’t say that I have a man crush on him or anything like that, but Tom Peters rocks my world.

So when I saw his new book, time stood still for me. I know, I’m a nerd.

But it’s not often when an author really speaks the words that are hidden within your heart.

There I go getting all cheesy and stuff but it’s true.

The only other author in the last decade to really do that for me has been Paulo Coehlo. When I started to read the Alchemist, I called in sick to work, and locked myself in my room so I could finish it.

The same is to be said about anything Tom Peters writes. (IMO)

Now I’m not saying that Tom Peters is anything like Paulo Coelho. And Paulo Coelho is nothing like Tom Peters.

It would be like comparing Batman to Wolverine.

Both hero’s are unique in their own ways. But both of them are doing their part to make the world a better place. Inspiring us to do what we can with the powers the we have.

Now back to my man crush. I mean back to Tom Peters.

His new book, “The Little Big Things: 163 Ways to Pursue Excellence” has just come out. The minute I saw it, and after I caught my breath, I HAD to crack it open.

So what’s a Little BIG Thing? Well Tom Peters says that it’s “A compelling nugget of a life experience that is representative of a BIG and Potent Idea.”

And let me tell you, there’s 163 big ideas on Excellence that you can take action on now in this book.(Cap E any time you type/write the word Excellence according to Mr. Peters)

I don’t know if I’m remembering this right, and it’s 12:30 in the morning right now so I might be a little off in my facts. But supposedly Tom starts his presentations off with the following little bit on Excellence.
Excellence
If Not Excellence, What?
If Not Excellence Now, When?

Think about that for a second.

Isn’t it Excellence that we’re really pursuing? That all our personal development efforts point toward this fact?

I leave that question for you to answer yourself.

But I know, personally for me, this concept his begun to shift some paradigms for me.

Wikipedia explains that, “Excellence is the state or quality of excelling.”

Now isn’t this our natural state? A place of pure potentiality. And our duty is to express that Excellence, that potential within us, as best we can.

To make this a little easier Tom Peters has come up with the “19 Es” of Excellence.

The “19 Es” of Excellence

Enthusiasm. (Be an irresistible force of nature!)
Energy. (Be fire! Light fires!)
Exuberance. (Vibrate—cause earthquakes!)
Execution. (Do it! Now! Get it done! Barriers are baloney! Excuses are for
wimps! Accountability is gospel! Adhere to the Bill Parcells
doctrine: “Blame no one! Expect nothing! Do something!”)
Empowerment. (Respect and appreciation rule! Always ask, “What do you
think?” Then listen! Then let go and liberate! Then celebrate!)
Edginess. (Perpetually dancing at the frontier, and a little or a lot beyond.)
Enraged. (Determined to challenge & change the status quo!)
Engaged. (Addicted to MBWA/Managing By Wandering Around. In touch. Always.)
Electronic. (Partners with the world 60/60/24/7 via electronic community building
and entanglement of every sort. Crowdsourcing rules!)
Encompassing. (Relentlessly pursue diverse opinions—the more diversity
the merrier! Diversity per se “works”!)
Emotion. (The alpha. The omega. The essence of leadership. The essence of sales.
The essence of marketing. The essence. Period. Acknowledge it.)
Empathy. (Connect, connect, connect with others’ reality and aspirations! “Walk
in the other person’s shoes”—until the soles have holes!)
Experience. (Life is theater! Make every activity-contact memorable! Standard:
“Insanely Great”/Steve Jobs; “Radically Thrilling”/BMW.)
Eliminate. (Keep it simple!)
Errorprone. (Ready! Fire! Aim! Try a lot of stuff and make a lot of booboos and
then try some more stuff and make some more booboos—all of it at
the speed of light!)
Evenhanded. (Straight as an arrow! Fair to a fault! Honest as Abe!)
Expectations. (Michelangelo: “The greatest danger for most of us is not that
our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and
we reach it.” Amen!)
Eudaimonia. (Pursue the highest of human moral purpose—the core of
Aristotle’s philosophy. Be of service. Always.)
Excellence. (The only standard! Never an exception! Start now! No excuses!
If not Excellence, what? If not Excellence now, when?)

And like Seth Godin said, “Tom is bombastic, insightful, thought provoking, connected, passionate, well read and in a hurry. Why on earth would you hesitate to read a book from him that costs less than a nickel a page! Go, now, quick… read more Tom.”

Pick up “The Little Big Things: 163 Ways to Pursue Excellence” at Amazon or Chapters.

Be Inspirational!
